End 1996 to January 1998 Gordon was part of the Presidential Protection
Unit (PPU) in Pretoria. As a member of a Army Medical Task Force
he received an internal transfer with four other members (after
it was enforced by parliament) to PPU as a Operational Medical Orderly
working on the Protection Team of President Mandela and (then) Vice-President
Thabo Mbeki, under the direct command of Sen.Supt. L. Jacobs (Head
of the PPU)
Gordon has served in the South African National Defense Force at
an Operational Medical Task Unit who had four divisions: - Operations,
- Intelligence, - Training, - VIP Protection.
In 1992 Gordon worked with the late Koevoet (Specialist Insurgency
SAPS Unit) as a personal Operational Medical Orderly along with
two other members.
Gordon became 2nd in Command of this Medical Task Force (consisting
of ten members) under direct command of Lt.Colonel A. Herbst &
Dr. (Lt.Colonel) W. v/d Merwe, providing support to various specialist
Police and Military Units such as:
Special Task Force - Dir. Freyer, Special Forces Regiment 5 (Lohatla,
Training), Koevoet - Sen.Supt. Fouche, Internal Stability Unit #1
(High-Risk Team - 'bats') - Dir. Bezuidenhout & Supt. K. van
Rhyn, National Protection Services (SAPS) Pretoria, Police undercover
units - Supt. Wolmarans, Combat Group 1 (Army - SOM) - Col. Beukes,
115 Battalion (Army), several Air Force Squadrons (41, 40,17) -
Col. E. Brown, Air Force Gym - Survival and orientation training
for pilots, 44 Parachute & 1 Parachute Regiment - Tokoza.
For the VIP Protection division & providing assistance to the
National Protection Services, Gordon assisted in various protection
tasks delegated to these divisions, such as the protection of:
President Sam Njoma (S.W.A), Defence Minister of Greece and 20
delegates, Saudi Arabia Prince's, Italian Minister of Defence, Delegates
who visited Armscor and Denel, President Attessari (Finland), Surgeon
General Knobel, Chief of Defense Force, Chief of SA Navy, General
Van Rensburg, Brig.General Fourie. Gordon was also part of this
division when they assisted the Secret Service during the visit
of Vice President Gore.
After resigning from the South African National Defense Force Gordon
did various private tasks consisting of the personal protection
of national Ambassadors, SBCI personnel, private individuals, executives,
housewifes, tourists and HRH Prince Faisal bin Turki from Saudi
Arabia as well as security cargo escorts to countries such as Mozambique,
Zimbabwe and Swaziland.
